Application Instructions

 Masters level

Master scholarships are only available for applicants from a European partner university who wish to apply for a semester exchange at a South African partner university. Students from European partner universities who are currently enrolled in a master programme or who will be enrolled next academic year can apply for an exchange period in South Africa in the 2nd semester (July – December 2014). It is mandatory to discuss your plans with your supervisor / faculty coordinator concerned if you wish to apply for an exchange period abroad in order to make sure that the study period abroad can be recognized at home. Courses at the home university need to be replaced by courses at the host university. The courses that will be taken at the host university need to be listed in what is called a 'learning agreement'. This document needs to be approved by both the home and host university. The learning agreement will guarantee the recognition of your credits obtained at the host university in your home university in Europe.
Generally one semester adds up to 30 ECTS credits.

 PhD Level

Application Applicants for an exchange scholarship are required to upload a preliminary learning agreement (courses) or study plan (research work) together with their online application. The preliminary learning agreement or study plan does not have to be officially approved yet at the time of application. It needs to give a realistic indication though of your study plan abroad. More information about available courses can be found via the info sheets of the partner universities.

PhD students may either apply for a short term (10 months) or a long term (34 months) scholarship. Candidates can only apply for predefined research topics that are listed in the application database.

Short term – ‘Exchange’ PhD

Candidates who are already enrolled in a PhD programme at their home university can apply for a 10 months scholarship. The list of available research topics is available in the application database.

Long term – ‘Degree’ PhD

Candidates who wish to obtain a degree can apply for a 34 months scholarship. The list of available research topics is available in the application database.

Please note that PhD studies in Europe generally take 4 to 5 years. This implies that you and/or your supervisor have to find additional funding to cover the last or two last years of your PhD studies in Europe.
PhD scholarships holders should discuss the starting date of their mobility with their supervisor. Exchange PhDs should start their research at the host university by 15 December 2014. We recommend however to start in September 2014, so you can take part in the orientation sessions of your host university.
Long term PhDs should start their research at the host university by 15 September 2014 the latest in order to benefit from the full length of the scholarship (34 months). The programme officially ends on 14 July 2017.
