• Undergraduate Applicants

  Legal entrance requirements:
  

  • The NSC for degree admission or Senior Certificate with matriculation exemption (or equivalent) is required for admission to degree studies in South Africa. Candidates who have passed in an alternative access programme approved by the Senate of this University, will qualify for a Conditional Senate Exemption and may be considered for admission to degree studies.

  • Applicants with non-South African school leaving qualifications need to submit proof that they qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities in terms of the guidelines provided by the Higher Education South Africa (HESA) – (Matriculation Board). Please refer to their website at: www.hesa.org.za.

  NB: Colleges will not consider your application for selection if you have not submitted your HESA evaluations.

• College Entrance Requirements

  In addition to the legal entrance requirements, South African applicants should meet the minimum points for specific programmes. All applicants should meet subject requirements and levels of performance for admission to certain programmes. Also note that the number of applications received by far outnumber the spaces available at University. Therefore, meeting the minimum requirements for application does not guarantee admission to the University.
  In addition to national entrance requirements all applicants need to meet the admission criteria set for specific academic programmes. These criteria are spelt out in the College Handbooks. 
  Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission to the university. The number of applications received by the university far out number the spaces available.

• English Language Requirements

  The University of KwaZulu-Natal is an English-medium university. Its language policy requires that all applicants, who are not from an English speaking country or have not been educated in an English speaking country, must demonstrate competence in English through one of the following:
  

  • A pass in an examination equivalent to English Higher Grade (First of Second Language) at South African Senior Certificate level (matriculation). Equivalencies are established by the South African Matriculation Board.
  • A pass in English at GCE A-level, or O-level (C symbol or higher), or International Baccalaureate.
  • International applicants who do not satisfy these requirements, and for whom English is a foreign language must either attain an overall score of 7.0 (for graduate students) or 6.0 (for undergraduates) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). For information on IELTS test dates, venues and costs, contact the British Council through your closest British Embassy or Consulate, or consult www.britishcouncil.org.
  • Attain a test score of at least 550 on the paper version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a score of at least 80 on the iBT (electronic) version of the test. For information about test dates, venues and costs, contact the United States Information Service (USIS) or the US embassy in you home country; or contact TOEFL direct at toefl@ets.org.   • Prospective applicants: The UKZN Language Centre provides a testing service and English language courses for those who do not meet these requirements. After testing, students whose scores are comparable to the required IELTS or TOEFL scores can apply directly to enter a degree programme. Those who do not are advised to spend one or two semesters learning English in the Language Centre
  • Prospective students who have English qualifications from other testing authorities should send their document to dace@ukzn.ac.za for evaluation.
  • The UKZN Language Centre also provides a testing service as well as English language courses for those who do not meet the requirements. After testing, students whose scores are comparable to the required IELTS or TOEFL scores can apply directly to enter a degree programme. Those who do not are advised to spend one or two semesters learning English in the Language Centre

All applicants must complete an official University application form when they apply to study at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

• Copies of school leaving certificates and translated copies (if original certificates are not in English)
• Certified copy of passport
• Proof of proficiency in English if English is a second language - TOEFL, with a score of 550, or IELTS with an overall band score of 6.0. (See detailed explanation in 2016 Fee Booklet)
